I got a voice message last week that brought a smile to my face.
It was from a client I’d worked with over a year ago to help him fix his lower back pain and transform his mobility for Muay Thai.
We spent 4 months together.
Fixed his tight hamstrings, re-built his hips from the ground up, and addressed compensation patterns from his desk-job (you check his testimonial here).
But here’s what I always wonder when someone finishes working with me:
Did I actually teach them what to do?
Or did they just follow my instructions?
After all, what use is pain-free movement if it only lasts while you’re paying someone to help you?
Here’s the transcript from the voice message Dan he sent me recently (shared with permission):
“Hey Matthew,
I just wanted to say thank you.
I had a really bad lower back day today.
I spent too long at my desk, didn’t warm up properly before heavy squats, and I could feel it get worse during the day.
Normally this would’ve spiraled. I would’ve pushed through training, made it worse, and probably ended up at the physio the next day.
But I remembered the mobility sequence you gave me for bad lower back days.
I stopped what I was doing, spent 10 minutes going through it, and the pain eased.
I didn’t let a bad day become a hospital visit. Just wanted to let you know that what you taught me actually stuck.”
If I had to boil down what I help people achieve into a short sentence, it would be something like this:
Move without limitations, train consistently, enjoy life doing what you love the most.
So to hear that this client recognized the warning signs, knew what to do, and prevented a small issue from becoming a major one, is exactly the sort of thing I love to hear.
But how did we do it?
We did the same things you already know you should be doing (plus the our secret saucey mobility methods):
- Build a simple, repeatable mobility routine you can do everyday
- Learn to recognize the warning signs before they become problems
- Have a “bad day” protocol
- Address the root cause, not just the symptoms
Sometimes we just need the “pain” of a financial investment and some human accountability to start actually putting this into action.
If today’s the day, let’s not waste any more time.
Apply to work with me, limited to 5 martial artists each month.

Matthew
